Hello everyone and welcome to the 2023-2024 school year at Hunter! I love teaching STEAM and 6+ math. This year marks my 26th year at Hunter GT/AIG Magnet Elementary. My teaching philosophy includes project-based and inquiry-based instruction. Making connections to the real world is vital to a firm understanding of the content. I also enjoy teaching electives such as Science Olympiad, Introduction to Engineering, Learning through Experimentation, and Physics in Action.
I received my K-6 teaching certification from Meredith College in 1998 also with a B.A. in English and minors in mathematics and professional communications. In 2004, I earned my Master's degree from NCSU in Curriculum and Instruction: Development and Supervision. I also have certifications in AIG and Middle Grades Mathematics (grades 6-9). One of my passions is writing curriculum and creating real world projects that students utilize in the classroom. The highlight of my teaching career was being named a Presidential Awardee for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching (science recipient) for North Carolina where I was able to meet then President Obama and attend the most amazing teacher professional development for a memorable week in Washington, D.C.
I live in Cary with my husband, Todd, and two sons, Christopher and Garrett. Christopher is a freshman at Vernon Malone College and Career Academy (early college for gaming design) and Garrett is a seventh grader at Moore Square Magnet Middle School. My husband is an engineering project manager, so you can only imagine our exciting dinner table conversations about science. :-)
Our family would not be complete without our furry pal, Trooper. He is a 10 lb. Maltzu (dad is a Maltese and mom is a Shih Tzu). The boys decided he resembled a Storm Trooper from Star Wars--so, they named him Trooper. He is a cute little fur ball with a bundle of energy. He loves to play fetch and cuddle in laps. Trooper just celebrated his 6th birthday.
A few years ago, we adopted an adorable pet hedgehog that Christopher fondly named Pixel. Pixel is extremely entertaining and enjoys playing with his small bell toy!
We also adopted a new pet this summer--a spotted axolotl that Christopher named Wasabi.
I also enjoy playing tennis. You will find our family on the courts almost every weekend. My husband and I both play league tennis through Cary Tennis Park and Ting Park. Tennis is such great exercise!
Every summer (except for the summer of 2020), we journey to Orlando, Florida. Our favorite places include Disney World, Lego Land, Universal Studios, Hollywood Studios, Sea World, and Animal Kingdom. My new favorite ride of all time is Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventures!
I am looking forward to a wonderful school year!
